Shrine OF Migrating ROOTs.
2026
The Temple of Princess Eight Treasures (Bā Bǎo Gōngzhū) in Taiwan originates from the legend of a Dutch woman who arrived on the island aboard a Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship. As story has it, upon expressing her longing to return home, local villagers burned a wooden vessel in a ritual send-off to usher her back across the sea.
Developed during a residency at Witte Rook’s 49m² site in Zaartpark, Breda, this project attempts to carve out a place of belonging for this displaced female deity within the Dutch landscape. The artistic process unfolds as an organic synthesis of material gathering and natural transformation: sweet potatoes are cultivated in jute sacks, while a makeshift shrine is erected using wild grass, branches, mole-heaved soil, and clay gathered from across the canal, all bound together with orange cord. Over the course of the residency, the structure was continuously reshaped by external interventions—a lawnmower’s path, an anonymous intrusion, and the unrelenting rain.
On the final day, the artist presented her narrative in Dutch alongside seven illustrations, performatively singing the national anthem Wilhelmus before lifting the shrine in a gesture of departure. Following the ritual, the soil and flora were left behind, permanently embedding the story into the terrain.
