Cicada Awakening draws from the insect’s long, subterranean dormancy and ultimate shedding of its shell as a potent metaphor for trans becoming. Set to religious chants, the performance opens on a threshold of life and death: a creature stirs under moonlight, discovering the ecstatic joy of movement within its newly claimed skin.

Yet, this fragile peace is violently shattered. The techno beat glitches and fractures—technology acts as a proxy for a chaotic world of warfare and geopolitical noise, encroaching upon the ritual until the cicada’s body explodes and dies under the sheer weight of reality.

From the ashes of this destruction, the frantic rhythm of Flight of the Bumblebee ignites a shamanic yet campy ritual of reincarnation. In a final, liminal retrospective, the cicada reviews its own brief, marvelous life. This mythic dismemberment and spiritual reassembly directly channels the cosmic anatomy of Nezha’s Three Heads and Six Arms (三頭六臂)—where the body must fracture to find its true multiplicity. The piece collapses in total exhaustion, concluding with a detached limb dropping in a moment of tragicomic irony. Through layered music, costume illusions, and high-emotion drag, Cicada Awakening reflects on life’s brevity, our naked vulnerability before global chaos, and the relentless loop of transformation.
